Lots going on!

I hope everyone had a great February Vacation.  We are entering one of the busiest times of the year so before I share this weeks winners of the Character Word of the Week, here are a few things to make note of.

Big Ryan
Don't forget to join us this Thursday evening at 6:30 for Family Story Night with Big Ryan.  Big Ryan is a master story teller and he always a big hit with my own kids.  We hope you can join us!

Dr. Seuss Day

To celebrate Read Across America we have been asking for students to read independently for 15 mins at home.  Students who complete 15 mins of reading time have their parents sign a Dr. Seuss hat which we then hang on the wall of the school.  Our goal is to fill the wall and meet MKG in the middle.  We are very close.  Please help us reach our goal and encourage your child to read!  Also please wear Red White and Black on Friday as we celebrate Dr. Seuss's Birthday!

BOX TOPS WINNERS!!
Congratulations to the following classes...

Mrs. Mastropietro, Mrs. Ferriera, Mrs. Card, Mrs. Martin and Mrs. Kaufman

Each of those classes will be treated to a Magic Show on March 5th at 1:30.  They were the classes with the highest total at each grade level.  Great job and thank you for all your support collecting BOX TOPS!

Spaghetti Supper
Please mark your calendar for March 22nd and plan on joining us for our annual spaghetti supper!  This year we have will have entertainment provided by Matt Roberts, an exciting performer, magician and comedian who is nationally recognized and has even performed along side the Muppets!  This is a great affordable way to spend a night out with your family, eat dinner and be entertained.  We hope you can join us.  Tickets go on sale from March 12th until March 20th.  Thank you to our AWESOME PTA for arranging this exciting evening!

MCAS Attendance
We have MCAS coming up for grades 3-5.  You will hear much more about this in the coming weeks but I want to mention a couple of things related to MCAS.
1. DON"T STRESS!  Please help us ease the anxiety.  MCAS is nothing to worry about and in fact students will do better if they are not stressed.  We want all students to try their hardest but not to worry.
2. GET REST AND EAT A HEALTHY BREAKFAST!  On the day of the test the best thing you can do to support your child is to make sure they get a good night sleep and eat a healthy low sugar breakfast!
3.  BE HERE!  Please do your best to ensure your child is present in school on the day of testing.  All students must take the MCAS and it is easier if they are here and take the test on the day the test is given.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding MCAS please do not hesitate to give us a call.

And now for the Character Word of the Week Winners!  The word of the week was Courtesy.  Congratulations to the following students.  Great Job!

Short Yet Busy Week!

So we had a short week as a result of the snow but we had a lot of great things going on here.  Before we get to the pictures I want to let everyone know that the new Expanded Learning Opportunities will begin the week after we get back from vacation.  The snow delayed the return of many permission slips and we will need a few extra days to get organized.

So.......as we leave for vacation here are some pictures and some updates of the cool things we had going on  here during the short week!

Scott Cannon
We had Scott Cannon here writing songs with grade 3 over the past few weeks.  This Wed. the students had the opportunity to hear and perform their songs in the Auditorium.  All the songs were about friendship and the PTA provided enough blank CD's so that students could receive a copy.  The songs were excellent and the kids had a great time!

Robert Frost
Today we were treated to a performance by the classes of Mrs. Mastropietro, Mrs. Burke, Mrs. Card, and  Mrs. Deluca.  Students performed the poem Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost both orally and in sign language.  We were all very impressed!!!!

Strings
At the end of the day Friday I was treated to an impromptu performance of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by some of our Strings Instrumentalists.  They are getting better every day.

Meteorologist
We also had meteorologist Joe Joyce from Channel 4 here Wednesday.  What great timing after the big storm.  Kids had a great time and had a lot of questions!

That's it for this week.  Have a great vacation!

About to come back!

You never realize how dependent you are on power until you don't have it for a few days!  As we are about to come back to school after a few storm related days off I hope everyone is ok and managed alright through the storm.

I received word yesterday that one local Middleborough Family had a very unfortunate accident and lost everything in a house fire.  Fortunately no one was hurt but they lost everything they own.  As a result, some of our parents are looking to join the broader communities efforts to support the family.  They are collecting gift cards to local stores.  As they begin to assess the families needs they may broaden the list of accepted donations but as of now they will be collecting gift cards.

If you are interested in donating please bring the gift cards here to the main office and we will forward them along.  Thank you in advance for your support!

Tech Meeting Canceled
Tonight's Technology Committee Meeting originally scheduled at NMS has been canceled.  I will post an update when the meeting is rescheduled.

BOKS Registration Extended
Due to the missed school days the deadline to register for BOKS has been extended to February 15th!

Read to Succeed
Please remember that the deadline to turn in your Reading Logs to receive tickets to Six Flags is this Friday!

SEE YOU ALL TOMORROW!

Odds and Ends

School is cancelled Friday 2/8 due to snow.

As Valentine’s Day quickly approaches I would like to take a moment and ask everyone to please be aware of student allergies and our wellness policy.

It is VERY important to us that we encourage healthy eating and we would like to encourage parents to avoid sending in food, especially of low nutritional value.

Additionally, we must be aware of any students with allergies.  Allergies range from peanut, tree nut to dyes, just to name a few.   As a result we ask that you please be cognizant of anything you are sending in as we are an Allergy Aware School.

If you have any questions at all please do not hesitate to contact us, your child’s teacher or the school nurse.

If you are just not sure and you really want to send something in, prizes such as pencils etc. are just as meaningful.

We appreciate your careful attention to this matter!

Read Together Challenge
As part of the Read Across America Challenge we are once again encouraging students to read at least 15 minutes independently at home.  Students will be provided with paper Dr. Seuss Hats.  If they have read for 15 mins. parents should sign the hat and send them in.  We are hanging them up in the halls and our goal is to have a row of hats all the way across our halls until we meet up with MKG in the middle.  Please help us achieve our goal and encourage your child to read!

Tech Committee
On February 12th from 6-7:30 there is a Technology Committee Meeting at NMS.  The technology committee is laying out a plan for the future of the Middleborough Public Schools as it relates to technology.  If you are interested at all I would encourage you to attend!

Mrs. Sullivan's 4th Grade Science Experiments
I had the pleasure of visiting Mrs. Sullivan who showed me a cool science project her kids have been working on.  Her class used the Scientific Method to answer the question- Are all salt crystals the same?

They made solutions of sea salt and Epsom salt, observed the crystals form and recorded their observations.  They report the sea salt crystals began to form first and were smaller because the solution evaporated quickly.   After a week the Epsom salt crystals looked like ice or plastic had formed over the top and all the solution still had not evaporated.

They found their answer, they do not all form the same, but now they have some new questions ;like- what other kinds of salt are there and is all the salt in the world's oceans the same?  I will let you know if they find the answer!

Great job guys!

Magic Show Correction, Scott Canon and Character Word of the Week

Before we get to the Character Word of the Week winners for this week I have one correction to make regarding our contest for the BOX TOPS collection.  I had previously written that the grade which collects the most BOX TOPS will win a Magic Show, however, it is actually the class with the highest collection at each grade will win a spot at the Magic Show Assembly!!!!!  Sorry for the confusion.

Don't forget.....this Thursday is Half Day Hat Day!!!!!!!

Expanded Learning Opportunities

Please be on the lookout for the permission slip that came home this Tuesday regarding the additional opportunities kids will have to participate in cool expanded learning opportunities.  Remember, spaces are limited so please return those forms as soon as you can.

Scott Canon

Singer/Songwriter and Author Scott Canon has been here all week with grade three writing, performing and recording original songs written and performed by students.  While they are not done with the finished product students have been having a great time.  Here are a couple of pics of the students hard at work!

And now on to this weeks winners!  The Character Word of the Week for last week was Motivation (the desire to move towards a goal).  And the winners are.......

Spaghetti Supper and other items

Spaghetti Supper
On March 22nd the HBB-MECC PTA will host the 3rd annual Spaghetti Supper.  This event is our biggest fundrasier of the year and, as always, all proceeds are used to bring great programs to our students.  Programs like the New England Percussion, Scott Cannon, The Museuam of Science, Bill HArley, Earth View and many more enriching opportunities are brought to the children of HBB thanks to fundraising efforts like the Spaghetti Supper.

Beyond fundraising, the Spaghetti Supper is a wonderful community event that is so much more than pasta!  In an effort to make the event as accessible as possible, the PTA strives to keep prices compatible with what it might cost you to treat your family to a meal at a local restaurant....in fact, we intend to bring you a delicious three course meal, sponsored by Mama Mia's of Carver and the Frosty Dog, and treat you to a live stage show for less than it would cost you to take your family to Friendly's   Guests will also have the opportunity to participate in the lucky chance drawing for dozens of amazing prizes and a silent auction will offer great opportunities for families to get fabulous deals while supporting HBB at the same time.  SO mark your calendar now and budget in a night of family fun at the 3rd Annual Spaghetti Supper   Lasts year's event sold out days in advance, so plan to get your tickets early!  Tickets go on sale March 12th, check out the PTA's new website at

Expanded Learning Opportunities
A couple of months ago we started our expanded learning block and it has been going great.  The focus of these activities has been to develop 21st century skills in students through academically enriching activities.  We are excited to let you know that we have a number of additional offerings which will start after Feb. Vacation.  Unfortunately due to a limited number of spaces available we will run these sessions on a first come first serve/lottery basis so please get your sign-up sheets turned in right away!  Sign up sheets will be available on this website in the coming days and will be coming home in next weeks Tuesday folder.

Read To Succeed!
Time is running out to turn in your Read to Succeed Reading logs.  If you want a free ticket to 6 Flags you must get your reading logs turned in to the main office.  Additional logs are available in the main office.

BOKS
The Spring session of BOKS is set to start March 11th and will run until May 30th.  Registration forms are available on the BOKS website http://www.middleboroboks.com/MiddleboroBOKS/Welcome.html or in the main office.  Registrations will be accepted until Feb. 12th and there will be a lottery due to the limited number of available spaces.
