All done with MCAS!!

We are finally done with MCAS and we are truly coming down the home stretch!  We are VERY proud of all our students.  Students who were tested worked very hard and all the other students did a great job keeping it quiet in the halls on testing days.  GREAT JOB!!

Spread the Word!!!!

We have two important dates coming up.  The first is next Thursday May 22nd as we will be hosting our Transition Night for incoming Kindergarten students and parents.  Doors will open at 6:30 and we will begin in the HBB Auditorium.  Please help spread the word.....incoming K students are welcome to attend!!

Thursday the 29th at 6 pm there will be an informational night here at HBB for all grade 5 students going up to Nichols Middle School.  The administration from NMS will be here to answer any and all questions so we hope to see you there.

Footwear

Please remember that flip flops are not allowed.  During recess and PE students play on pavement and we do not want students to get injured so we ask that you please help us prevent injuries and ensure that students wear the proper footwear.  Thank you!!

DIBELS and DRA are coming soon

We want to make sure everyone is aware that we will be administering the DIBELS assessment for students in grades 1-3 and the DRA for all students over the coming weeks.  Both DIBELS and DRA are reading assessments and allow for us to track growth over the year in regards to reading and allows for us to plan individualized reading instruction and interventions based on students reading abilities.  Should you have any questions regarding this please do not hesitate to contact us or check out these websites for more info on DRA and DIBELS.

Wrapping up the week

Save the Date

Attention all parents who have a 5th grade student going to Nichols next year!  On May 29th at 6 pm the Admin. Team at NMS will be in the HBB Auditorium to answer any and all questions regarding the transition to 6th grade.  We will be sharing more information in the near future.  In the meantime, mark your calendars and save the date!

Footwear

As the nice weather approaches I would like to remind all students to wear the appropriate footwear to school.  We discourage students from wearing flip flops or any shoes that are not secure when running because of the fact that students participate in recess everyday in an area that is mostly pavement and students have PE twice per week.  Please help us prevent student injuries and encourage appropriate footwear!  Thank you!

Sportsmanship Challenge Awards

As you may have heard the most recent Burkland's Best Challenge is the Sportsmanship Challenge from the PE Department.  To be selected for the award students must demonstrate the following......

• They are prepared for every class with appropriate clothing and footwear
• They complement both teams
• They are able to lose or win without complaining or bragging
• They are willing to work with everyone and do not complain about whose team
• They are skillful and lead others in games and performances
• They encourage their classmates and help them become better
• They are willing to play any position without complaints
• They understand that people bring different experience levels to sports and can adjust their skills to help their teammates be successful

Students that possess these characteristics often in physical education will be awarded a physical education to charm to add to their necklace! Ms. Campbell, Ms. McLaughlin and Mr. Whitelaw will be looking for students who demonstrate these characteristics in their physical education classes and the awards will be given out at lunch!

Thank you LaCroix Family!!

This week Mr. and Mrs. LaCroix brought some of their farm animals for a visit an the kids had a great time.  Thank you Mr. and Mrs. LaCroix.....enjoy the pictures.

Coming down the home stretch!!!!

MCAS

Next week marks our last round of MCAS.  Grades 3- 5 will be tested in Math and Grade 5 will be tested in Science.  Please make sure all students get a good night sleep and eat a healthy breakfast on testing days.  Also, please encourage students to try their best.  The MCAS is not something that students need to be stressed about.  They have been working hard all year and we are confident that our students are well prepared and they are going to do great!

Teacher Appreciation

This is just a quick note to let everyone know that next week is Teacher Appreciation Week!  We have awesome teachers here at HBB that work tirelessly for the students.  Please take a moment to thank our teachers!!

Sportsmanship

One of our Burkland's Best Challenges will begin next week during PE.  The next challenge focuses on the Character Word of the Week for next week, Sportsmanship.  Students who best demonstrate Sportsmanship during PE class will be recognized by Mr. Whitelaw, Mrs. Campbell and Ms. McLaughlin and they will be given their Sportsmanship Charm during lunch.

Also please remember that it is not too late to earn your charm for either Reading or Math.  Just turn in your completed paper work!  Also, keep your eye out for more fun challenges!!
