The Power of Reading and Pennies for Patients

The Power of Reading
With all the snow, days stuck in doors, and MCAS coming up we thought it might be a perfect time to remind everyone about the Power of Reading! One of the most powerful and important things you can do as a parent to support your child’s learning is to find ways at home to encourage your child to read. Here are just a few ways you might want to try to encourage your child to read.

Reading Routine – Finding time every day or night to read together is a great way to encourage your child to read and is a priceless family ritual. Simply reading a book aloud to your child….no matter what age….can help support reading and shows kids that reading can be fun.

Use Technology – Ipads, Kindles etc. all have access to countless books and some kids are more interested in reading books on a device. Don’t be afraid to let them if it gets them reading!

Fill your house with books – Access to books is one of the most important things you can do. Library cards are free and take advantage of the Scholastic Book Fair! You can also give books as presents!

Surround your child with words – Vocabulary development is an essential part of becoming a good reader. Challenge yourself to teach your child new words everyday. When reading books stop at difficult words and make sure your child understands what the word means. Teach your child how to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words using the context the word is used withing the book. You can also create vocabulary flashcards and play games. It may not seem like much but working to help your child to acquire new vocabulary can be a powerful tool that can really help make a difference!

Pennies for Patients
Our students continue to amaze me.  Today in the cafeteria we had a representative here from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society going over the Pennies for Patients contest (more on that in a minute) when I learned that one of our 2nd graders just raised over $300 for St. Jude's Cancer Center!  It was her 8th birthday the other day and instead of asking for presents  she asked for donations......WOW!

I hope sharing that story will help motivate everyone to join in our most recent fundraising efforts!  In continuing with our on going efforts to raise money to fight cancer we will be working to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.  Students have been provided with a small change box to bring home in an effort to collect spare change which will then be donated to Leukamia and Lymphoma Society.  Each class has a donation box that students will be able to place their collections in.  Additionally, we will be having a "for fun only" contest with MKG to see who can raise the most money.  The contest will run from February 2nd to February 27th and Nurse Colegero will be collecting all funds.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society spends all donations on patient and community services, research, public health and professional education.  Remember, every little bit helps and Thank You advance for your support!

Patriots Day
It was great to see everyone in dressed in their Pats Gear today.  Enjoy the SuperBowl this weekend and GO PATS!!

Clubs, Character Word of the Week and the Golden Broom

We have another cold week down in what has been a great 2015 so far!  This week we started our After School Enrichment Program and overall it has been a great success!  We have over 246 students participating in clubs and the kids have been having a great time.

We would like to remind all parents to pay very close attention to the Enrichment Program Schedule as not all clubs run every week.  We have all the dates and times posted on our school calendar which can be found on the Blog.

Please also remember that if the club is scheduled to run on a particular day, your child will be sent to the club.  If they are not attending you must send us a note or call to inform us, otherwise they will not be allowed to go on the bus.
