Read Between The Lines

Read between the lines!
Learning to make inferences when reading, or reading between the lines, is one of the most important strategies we teach our students.  The ability to make inferences is a key strategy in developing solid Reading Comprehension and there are things you can do at home to help your child develop this essential skill......starting with reading together!

Fables- Fables are an excellent choice for teaching children how to make inferences.  Find a fable (here is a link to some great children's fables http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show/children-fables) and have your child try to explain the lesson or the morale of the story.  Have them give you examples from the text that might support their thinking.

Ask the right questions- Asking questions during and after reading are the key.  Ask your child questions like "how do you know that?" "why do you think that?" "what do you think the character was feeling?" "why do you think the character did that?".  Work with your child to find clues or evidence in the text that can help understand the message and find answers to your questions.

Don't worry about making mistakes!  Interactive reading with your child is a great way to help them succeed in school.  Much of what we do in school involves students reading text closely, looking for the deeper meanings and finding evidence.  While it is powerful to read to your child at home it is even more effective when you take some of the added steps mentioned above!

New Challenges and a Poster Contest

I can't believe it is already February Vacation!  With all the snow it has been tough to get in a groove but overall things have been plugging along!  I hope everyone enjoys the vacation week and finds some time to get outside, relax and do something you love.  I have included some information about 2 new challenges and a poster contest that might be fun to do together as a family over the vacation week.

Reading Challenge and Read Across America Month

With vacation upon us I thought it might be a good time to introduce two new challenges to the students at HBB.  The first is our Reading Challenge.  March is Read Across America Month, an event which is sponsored by the NEA and we have a bunch of things planned throughout the month to encourage reading but the first is the Reading Challenge.  I wanted to share this now so that students can start thinking about and searching for the book they want to read!

Good Egg Challenge

The next challenge is the Good Egg Challenge......read below for more details!

Writing Challenge Winners

It took a while but today I gave out the Writing Challenge Awards to all our Super Writers.  Students did a great job writing essays describing what they want to be when they grow up and how they are going to accomplish their dreams.  Great Job and Congratulations!

Staff Basketball Game!

Volunteer Reception

Please mark your calendars for June 4th as we will be hosting a Thank You Reception for all volunteers from 5-7. We are blessed here at HBB to have AMAZING volunteers who give up a lot of their personal time to help out, fundraise and make HBB the best school it can be. The reception will be here at HBB and we will have more information coming out closer to the date. In the meantime, put it in your calendars!

Attendance

Student attendance at HBB has been great this year!  In fact, we were the highest in the district again this month!  Please keep it up but also remember that absences are only excused when accompanied by a Doctors Note, a Dentist Note, or documentation from court or a funeral.  Remember, student attendance is crucial to academic success.  Kids have to be here to learn!

Box Tops

Please keep those Box Tops submissions coming.  The deadline to submit Box Tops is next Thursday!  Thank you in advance for helping us with this fundraiser.
