Big Blast....Another Successful Event!

HBB Big Blast
Friday night we celebrated our annual HBB Big Blast and it was another great success.  Thank you to the PTA for all your hard work organizing this great event and thank you to everyone who came out to support HBB.  All the proceeds raised go right back to the kids at HBB funding things such as the After School Programs, Field Trips, Enrichment and the Family Resource Center.  Thanks again!

After School Programs

We are thrilled to have our after school enrichment program up and running for the year! It is great to see so many kids staying after school excited to participate in academically enriching activities. This session will run for approximately 8 weeks and we will be running a second session after the holiday break, so be on the lookout for a second round of sign-ups.

For those of you who have a child participating we ask that you please pay very close attention to the calendar to see which days clubs are meeting. Pickup from clubs happens promptly at 4:30 pm.

Healthy Athletes
Friday was a busy day!  Not only did we have the Big Blast but we also had some special guests during lunch! Athletes from MHS came during lunches to speak with the kids about the importance of eating healthy.  Thank you to Mrs. Bagnell, Mr. Branagan and Mr. Perry for organizing this great event.  Our kids really enjoyed eating lunch with our MHS Athletes!

Family Resource Center

When you get a chance please check out the website/blog of our new Family Resource Coordinator Meghan Quirke. The website is far from complete but Mrs. Quirke is working hard to develop a site that will be a great resource for parents and community members. Don’t be afraid to reach out to Mrs. Quirke here at the school. She definitely wants to hear from you!

Wrapping up the week

Welcome/overview of the Family Resource Center

Dear Families,

I am very excited to introduce myself to you as your Coordinator for the new Family Resource Center, serving MECC MKG and HBB!

The actual Center is located within HBB and families/parents/guardians are welcome to stop in or call (508) 946- 2040 ext. 4319 to make an appointment to meet with me.  Feel free to email me at mquirke@middleboro.k12.ma.us

or please check out my blog which can be found at

My background is rooted in service as upon graduating with a BS in Psychology from Bridgewater State, I began my career as a Residential Case Manager working for an organization that serves individuals with disabilities (Road to Responsibility, Inc.).  I continued on to work for MY TURN, Inc., a high school drop-out prevention program collaborating with schools and community members to support at risk youth. Currently, and for the past four years, I’ve been a Career Resource Specialist with Work Opportunities Unlimited providing employment services to individuals with barriers to employment.  In this role, my focus has been on supporting parents who are motivated to improve their lives in order to support their children.  Knowing the support I have provided will have a positive impact on the family as a whole is what inspires me to continue this awesome work and the reason I found myself compelled to pursue this new position.

As I wrap up my second week, I’m reflecting on all of the wonderful parents, staff and administrators with whom I have met and already begun to collaborate with.  I’m grateful for this opportunity to develop the programs and processes of the Family Resource Center with the goal of increasing family and community engagement.  I am confident that the work we will do in the Family Resource Center will directly impact our student’s achievement in a positive way.  Driven by service for others; with a positive approach, an open mind and a caring heart, I will bring my very best to make the Family Resource Center the best it can be in the coming school year.

I look forward to meeting you soon!
Best,

Meghan Quirke

Support Learning at Home
This year we are really hoping to push and encourage you to support learning at home. There are many things you can do as a parent that may not seem like a big deal, but you can actually have a huge impact on your child’s performance in school. Here are just a few things you can do to support learning at home.

Establish a Daily Family Routine

- Provide a quiet space, time, and materials for studying and reading.
- Assign chores and regular household tasks.
- Support good health habits: regular exercise, proper amount of rest, nutritious meals and snacks.

Encourage High but Realistic Expectations for Achievement

- Encourage your Child to work hard in school
- Regularly discuss education, life skills, careers and interests
- Regularly affirm your child’s self worth through positive messages.

Read, Write and Discuss

- Read to your child and listen to your child read
- Provide opportunities for writing (grocery lists, letters, stories to share with the family)
- Discuss with your child his or her school day, your day or current events.

Model the value of learning
- Set an example by reading at home and engaging in other learning activities.
- Play games together that require planning ahead and problem solving rather than pure luck
- Communicate openly

All of these ideas and more came from the following site.

Practice Makes Better

“Practice Makes Better!”
Last week all 1st grade classes were treated to a visit from author/illustrator Brian Lies and our staff and students LOVED the message. He made great connections to the curriculum for students when talking about writing but most importantly; he stressed the importance of working hard.

He spoke about how he was not the best at drawing when he was in 1st grade but through practice and hard work, he got better!  We love this message because it is consistent with what we have been talking about here at HBB for 2 years.  We want students to try their hardest at everything they do!  Please take a minute to talk to your child about why working hard is important!

The Big Blast is Coming!
Please plan on joining us on Friday October 23rd for the annual HBB Harvest Big Blast.  For those new to HBB, the Big Blast is a fun event for the whole family.  There will games, prizes, a web crawl, a pumpkin carving contest and many other fun things for the whole family.
