Wrapping up the Week!

MCAS
If you have not already, you will soon receive your child’s individual MCAS Scores. We are very proud of the hard work our students put forth on MCAS last year. As you sit down to look at your child’s results please know that MCAS is is just one small measure of a student overall. There are many things that are just as important if not more important such as working hard, putting forth effort and being a positive contributing member of the community.

We take MCAS very seriously but do not want anyone to worry too much about any one result. At this level the test is more informative for us as a school in regards to what areas we need to focus our instruction on in order for students to excel on the new standards.

We have been making progress as a school but we still have a lot of work to do. In order to reach the next level as a school and district we need your help. We need you to support, not just the school, but your child’s education! What does that mean? It means taking the time to help your child with homework. It means encouraging reading at home. It means asking questions about your child’s learning. Most importantly, it means encouraging and praising what is most important to their success overall……HARD WORK!

Praise your child’s efforts, not just their ability. If your child continues to work hard in school they will succeed in school and life, in the short term and over time. We will not stop working until we get the overall results the school and your child deserve. We will also not ignore the other important aspects of ensuring your child receives a great, well-balanced education.

Jesse's Bench
Despite the rain we had an incredibly powerful moment this week as we gathered together with Jesse's Family for the unveiling of Jesse's Bench.  The PTA, behind the hard work of Mrs. Farley, paid for the Bench which is dedicated to the memory of Jesse.  The bench is a "Buddy Bench" and is outside next to our play ground.   Whenever a student does not have a friend or someone to play with they can sit on the bench and the other students know to be on the look out to help that student and to ask that child to play with them.  The bench will be another powerful way to promote the Burkland's BEST.  The ceremony was great and Thank YOU to everyone who made this possible!
