This is a long post so make sure to scroll all the way down to see it all!
Donate your Halloween candy for a good cause!
Tomorrow is Halloween! Please remember that we do not want students wearing costumes to school or candy sent in. One thing you can do with the candy is donate it! We will be accepting donations of Halloween candy for the Children at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. This is a great way to get rid of some of that unneeded candy! There will be a collection box in the main office at HBB!
Mr. Gobeil
For those who do not already know, we are going to be without Mr. Gobeil for the next few weeks as he has undergone a medical procedure. He has already had the procedure, he is recovering well and we look forward to his return!
In his absence Mrs. McDonald and Mrs. Doak will be doing there best to step in and help out and we have brought in an extra set of hands in Mr. Craig to assist with supervision in areas such as lunch and recess. While there is no replacing Mr. Gobeil we have a solid plan in place and we will be holding down the fort and looking forward to his return.
Power of One
The Power of One was here last week and all student heard a powerful message about bullying and about the fact that we all have the power to stop bullying and to create a safe bully free school. I would encourage you to ask your child about the oath they took and signed and what they learned from this assembly. The next time you are in the school look around the main lobby for the oath which we will be hanging with all student signatures.
Bill Harley
We have also been treated to a visit this week in grades 2 and 4 from Bill Harley. All grade 2 and 4 students were treated to a concert/assembly from Bill and all grade 4 students had a classroom visit from Bill to discuss his book The Night of the Spadefoot Toads. This book was the mentor text for the new unit of study in 4th grade and students seemed thrilled to have a visit from the author of the book.
Tea in Mrs. Medeiros' room
Last week I was treated to a visit to Mrs. Medeiros' room to join in as she invited all parents to hear students read their writing that were prepared for the visit. I had a great time and the students all did a wonderful job!
Big Blast
The Big Blast has quickly turned in to one of my favorite events of the year. This year was so much fun and I want to thank our PTA again for all their efforts! I also want to thank all the parents who attended this event and for all your support. All the proceeds raised will go directly towards funding programs for students here at HBB, so again, THANK YOU!
Character Word of the Week Winners
Lastly but very much importantly....congratulations to our Character Word of the Week Winners for this week. Great job and keep up the good work!

Halloween Candy
Just a quick reminder for all parents to please keep all Halloween Candy at home......we are asking that you do not send candy in with students on Halloween or after Halloween. We are also asking students not to wear costumes to school on Halloween.....but you are welcome to wear them to the Big Blast!
Power of One
We are very excited to announce that the whole school will be treated to an assembly tomorrow from the Power of One. We will also be taking the Power of One Oath.......
We put a great deal of effort into maintaining a positive school environment by setting positive behavioral expectations. We do this through the Burkland's Best, the Character Word of the Week and the Husky Haven. Positive behavioral expectations are important but we still need to teach our students about bullying, how to recognize bullying and what to do about it. There are also many things you can do at home to support our efforts.
For starters, please take some time to ask your child about the Power of One assembly and the pledge they took. You can also talk about recognizing the signs of bullying and what to do about it. For more information what to talk about with you child check out this site....

Butterflies
One of my favorite times of the week is Wednesday afternoons at 2:30. Every Wednesday I go to Ms. Schobel's class and I participate in the intervention block. Each week I go into the class and I work with students on Math and Reading so that Ms. Schobel can work closely with a small group of students, reinforcing concepts taught in class. I have been very impressed with how hard all the students have been working each time I visit.
Because I have been getting to spend time with the class they invited me this week to come early as they released their butterflies. We had a great time and I got a couple of pictures....enjoy!
That is it for now, have a great long weekend!

Go Red Sox
Another great week down! This was another great week here at HBB. We had Red Sox Day on Thursday and there was lots of learning going on all week. Before we share the Character Word of the Week Winners for this week here are a few important reminders.....
Stranger Danger
We are asking for your help in addressing this very important topic. Addressing the issue of what to do when confronted with a stranger is not something that should only be discussed with 1st and 2nd graders. It is something that should be discussed with students of all age and we are asking that you please take a moment to help reinforce the message. For helpful hints on how to talk about this issue, or what to talk about, here are two helpful websites.

Envisions Math
We are very excited about our new Math Curriculum for this year called Envisions. This program is rigorous and challenging yet enjoyable for students. We would like to encourage you to support your child's learning by accessing the online tools for the Envisions program. Your child's teacher will be sending information home soon on how students can log in at home to access work, extra help etc. and for those interested in accessing the Envisions text books at home please click the following link
