Big Blast is Coming!
Thank you to everyone who came out to our annual Open House. We were, once again, thoroughly impressed with the turnout and all the support from parents. Our book fair was a big hit and it seemed like everyone really enjoyed being able to come and see their child's class!
After School Clubs
We are very excited to announce that our first session of after school clubs has begun! We ask that all parents please pay very close attention to the schedules of when your child’s specific club is running
All clubs run from 3:30 – 4:30 and we ask that all parents be here on time to pick up your child. At the conclusion of clubs each child must be signed out by a parent or guardian. If you have someone other than yourself picking up your child we ask that you communicate that to us by sending a note in with your child. As always, any questions just give us a call!
Title 1 Home School Compact
Last week you should have received a Title 1 Home School Compact in the Tuesday folder outlining Parent, Student and School Responsibilities. Thank you to everyone who has signed and sent it back. We also want to acknowledge that there were some that did not agree with our sending it home and we would also like to thank you for bringing your concerns to our attention.
Please know that sending the Home School Compact is mandated as part of our receiving Federal Title One funding. As the turnout at our Open House shows, our home to school connection is something we are incredibly proud of and thankful for. We are blessed to have so many amazing and supportive parents and we are fully aware that the Compact simply outlines what you already do everyday! Thank you again for all your support and, as always, don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.
BIG BLAST IS COMING!
Please mark your calendars for Friday October 27th because we have one of the best events of the year coming up! For those of you new to HBB the Big Blast is a whole school Halloween event that you won’t want to miss!
Did you know that you can preorder your tickets? The ticket & caramel apple pre-sale ends on October 18th (See flyer below). Purchasing tickets ahead of time saves money and time waiting in line. Only a limited # of apples will be available for purchase at the event. Doors open at 6pm. Volunteers and donations are still needed. Go to the link below to volunteer.

Wrapping up the Week
We are wrapping up another AWESOME week here at HBB! We are looking forward to getting clubs started next week and the kids were beside themselves with excitement that the Husky Haven is FINALLY open!
After School Clubs
We are very excited that After School Clubs are about to begin! Please pay VERY close attention to our calendar and stay up to date to what days clubs are running and when they are not (SEE BELOW). If your child is staying for a club we ask that you please be on time to pick your child up. Pick up is at 4:30 pm and we ask that all parents form a line in the main lobby behind the sign for the club your child is participating in. All students must be signed out by a parent or guardian. If someone other that the child’s parent or guardian is picking up we ask that you please provide a note in advance. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and don’t hesitate to give us a call if you have any questions! Please note that some of our clubs were not able to run because we did not have enough students. When possible alternate clubs were assigned. We are sending home forms today for all students informing them of their clubs.
Open House
Open House is almost here and we hope you will be able to make it. Open House is planned for this Wednesday October 11th from 6:30 – 8. Open House is a great opportunity to learn about the curriculum, see your child’s classroom and meet the teachers and staff. Please remember that Open House is not a time to discuss individual concerns about your child with the teacher. Should you have specific concerns as it relates to your child we ask that you please reach out via email or phone. We will also have sign up sheets available for Parent Teacher Conferences, which are coming in November. Parent Teacher Conferences is the time to discuss individual concerns and to find out how your child is doing.
This year at Open House we will also have a One Night Only Scholastic Book Fair! The Book Fair will be running all night long and is a great way to pick up some new books.
Please also consider visiting our Title One table at Open House to learn more about the great Title One programming the students at HBB are provided throughout the school year.

Fall After School Clubs
Walk to Learn
One of the things that we take great pride in here at HBB is our block of time called Walk to Learn, which happens daily from 9-9:30. During this time we have all staff available to provide interventions, enrichment and activities to students. Students are selected based on need and offering and not all students are selected. All interventions that are provided are designed to be short term (roughly 6 weeks) and designed to give a needed boost. Over the coming weeks you may hear your child talking about this block of time. Most children participate in some sort of group during this block of time at some point in their time here at HBB. Your child's participation in one of these groups is not something to be concerned about. Rest assured that if we have a concern about your child's progress your child's teacher will reach out to you to discuss the concern. The Walk to Learn Block is just a creative way to tap into the many strenghts of our staff and to ensure that each child gets what they need when they need it. As with anything, should you have any questions or concerns give us a call!

Odds and Ends and Ms. Beird's Big Week
Over the past year the book Wonder by R.J. Palacio has been
exceptionally popular with our students.
So popular in fact that the Anderson family actually gave us a few hard
cover copies of the book and journals that we will be raffling off during
lunches. The central theme of the book
is being kind and compassionate and over the course of the year we will be
reading quotes from another book the Anderson Family donated to the school
called 365 Days of Wonder, also by R.J.
Palacio.
As we shared a different
quote each day, teachers will be discussing the purpose and meaning with
students. Thank you to the Anderson
Family for their generous donation! Here
are a couple of great quotes from the last couple of weeks.....
“Find Beauty in the world and the world
will find beauty in you.”
-
Zoe
-
“If there is no progress, there is no
struggle.”
-
“Frederick
Douglas
-
“You can’t have a rainbow without a
little bit of rain.”
-
Unknown
-
“When given the choice between being
right or being kind, chose kind.”

First Full Week!
This week we had our Community Meeting with each grade and had the opportunity to discuss a variety of things with students and to tell them about the year ahead. The big message of our meetings this month was that You Can Do Anything! We want our students to understand that with hard work and perseverance they can be and do anything they put their mind to. We also discussed how your brain is just like a muscle and it actually gets stronger when you work on challenging things. In 5th grade one of our 5th grade students talked about the book Wonder and the importance of being kind to each other! We hope that you can take a moment to discuss your child’s goals with them and encourage them to stretch themselves and to work their hardest in everything they do!

Parent Pickup and Dismissal
If you are picking your child up at the end of the day please remember that parent pickup takes place in the back of the building. If you are dismissing your child, which is not the same as pickup, you must do so by 2:45, otherwise you may be asked to join the pickup line out back. The office becomes exceptionally busy during dismissal and our priority at that time is to ensure that all students get on the right buses and that we have all walkers and afterschool students accounted for. For that reason we are asking that if you need to dismiss your child early, it must be done by 2:45, otherwise we may ask you to join the parent pickup line out back.
Bus Changes
Bus changes are only allowed for emergency day care issues. We try our best to accommodate parents and help out as needed but we do not bus changes for play-dates etc. Some of our buses are full and if we add more students they will not safely fit on the bus. Again, bus changes should only be done for emergency day care purposes. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Breakfast
This year we would like to encourage all students to eat a healthy breakfast every morning. Did you know breakfast is available to ALL interested students? If you have a hard time getting your kids out the door in the morning maybe one solution is to have them eat their breakfast with us. We have allotted time each morning for students to go to the cafeteria to get their breakfast. If you are interested in learning more please give us a call.
5th Grade Ninja
In case you haven't been watching we are very proud to announce that Ms. Beird was once again on American Ninja Warrior this week as she has been doing great this season. In fact, Ms. Beird was only the 2nd women ever to complete Stage 1 of the Finals! Stay tuned in to American Ninja Warrior to see how she does in the finals. Here is a link to a recent article about Ms. Beird from ESPN.

First Day is Almost Here!
The first day of school is Tuesday September 5th. Doors open at 8:40 am! We have had a very busy summer getting everything ready for another great year at HBB and we can't wait to get started. Have a great Labor Day weekend, see you next week!!!! Here are a couple important reminders for the first day of school.
Label all Your Stuff!
Please make sure to label all your child's belongings! Every year our lost and found is packed with all sorts of clothes, lunch boxes, hats and gloves! If your child's name is written on their stuff we will be sure to get it back to them.
How Your Child Gets Home
Please do not forget to send in your form that we sent home over the summer that lets us know how your child gets home each day over the first week of school.
Drop Off
If you are dropping off your child on day 1 please remember that parent drop off in the morning occurs at the front of the building (Mayflower Ave.). Doors open at 8:40 am. We ask that parents stay in line with all the other cars. Do not cut around each other after your child exits the car. Please do not let your child out of the car until we signal to do so and do not drop your child in the parking lot. We ask that everyone please be patient in the first couple of days as it often takes a few days to get everything moving smoothly. If everyone cooperates drop off is a quick and smooth process. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
