We are coming down the home stretch!

Welcome back everyone!  We hope you all had a restful vacation and that everyone is ready for the last couple months of the year.  We would like to encourage everyone to pay very close attention to the school calendar, which can be found at the bottom of this page, because we have TONS of stuff going on over the last 39 school days.....Starting with MCAS next week!

LipDub!

Before we left for vacation we began recording our annual LipDub.  Thank you to our PTA for providing all students with an HBB shirt!  The kids had a great time recording and we are really looking forward to seeing the final product.  Moving forward we would like to encourage all students to wear their new Burkland's BEST Shirts on Fridays!  Here are a few pictures from the day of recording!

MCAS Math and Ride for Kids!

MCAS Math is right around the corner!

Right as we wrap up ELA MCAS we have Math MCAS and Science for Grade 5 coming up soon. We have been thoroughly impressed with the effort of our students and we have been appreciative of the efforts of all parents to ensure good attendance and that our students are well prepared on testing days.
As we approach Math MCAS we would like to encourage all parents to talk about Math at home with your child. We often hear from parents that they are not comfortable with math and they are unsure how to help their child.
Well the first step is to not be afraid! The way children learn math today is very different from the way we all learned when we went to school. Don’t be afraid to ask your child questions about what they are learning. Don’t be afraid to ask your child’s teacher clarifying questions. Have your child explain the concepts they are working on and follow up with questions. When they are finished with their homework have them show you how they solved some of their problems. Math does not always have to be about getting the right answer. There is a process to solving problems and when children are asked to explain their thinking it helps them reinforce their own understanding of concepts. IT IS OK TO SAY YOU DON’T KNOW. Try to figure it out together. There are some great tutorial websites out there as well. One great site is Kahn Academy.
Remember, showing your enthusiasm for what your child is learning at school lets them know that you value school overall. It is ok if you do not understand something. The best way to encourage your child to be a lifelong learner is to be one yourself!

Please make sure that you send your child to school with snack, make sure they get a good night sleep, eat a healthy breakfast and let them wear some comfy clothes.  Also please encourage your child to try their hardest!
